Lay Down Rotten's 2007 release, Reconquering the Pit, may just win for the best metal album title of the year. However, the music contained within is your standard growl 'n' grind death metal — very few surprises are included here. If you're a death metal connoisseur, you've probably heard it all before, as Reconquering the Pit is overflowing with impeccable double bass drumming, shredding solos, and of course, Cookie Monster vocals: all crucial elements for your next death metal party. If you're looking for no-frills extreme metal, then tunes such as the title track and another exquisite title — "Sound of Breaking Bones" — should do. Reconquering the Pit? If you say so. Reinventing the death metal wheel? Certainly not.

A German death metal band that originally came to be in 1999 as the solo project of vocalist Daniel Jakobi, Lay Down Rotten quickly expanded to a band within a year, and by November of 2000 had completed work on a four-track demo. Joined by a trio of musicians prior to the demo sessions, the group made a quick turnaround and was back in the studio in 2001 to put more down on tape.
