Album Review

Laura Lee was a soulful voice in the women's rights movement. Three cause-championing songs are on this best-of collection: "Woman's Love Rights," "Love & Liberty," and the humorous (to women) "Rip Off," where Laura flees with all the home's possessions while her man is at work, even taking the phone out of the wall so he can't make any calls. Lee's version of "Crumbs Off the Table" is sung to a slightly different arrangement than the Glass House's version. Nobody came up with more creative titles for songs than Invictus/Hotwax Records; "If You Can Beat Me Rockin' (You Can Have My Chair)" proves that statement. Three excellent redone standards are tastefully executed by Lee: "Guess Who I Saw Today" rivals Nancy Wilson's; her rendition of "At Last" can compete with anybody's; and "Since I Fell For You" is delivered with the reverence it deserves.

Her music laid the groundwork for artists like Millie Jackson and Denise LaSalle...
