A few years before Spinal Tap, ace comedians Neil Innes and Eric Idle conceived The Rutles, an imaginary band that satirised the mythology surrounding The Beatles. This collection, featuring music from the 1978 mockumentary All You Need Is Cash, artfully toes the line between savage send-up and loving tribute. “Cheese and Onions” and “Ouch!” show off the group’s knack for penning tunes that sound like authentic artifacts from the ’60s, yet are utterly ridiculous. This is comedic pastiche of the highest order.

Originally broadcast on network TV in 1978, ex-Monty Python member Eric Idle's satire of the Beatles' legend was one of the very few successful rock parodies; only Spinal Tap, perhaps, has outdone it. One of the key elements of this mock rockumentary was the brilliantly executed soundtrack by Python associate and ex-Bonzo Dog Band member Neil Innes (he also played the character loosely based upon John Lennon in the film itself).
