Edward MacDowell

About Edward MacDowell

Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) was regarded at the turn of the 20th century as the most significant American composer, though his music fell into almost total obscurity as the decades passed. For years, MacDowell was best remembered for To a Wild Rose from Woodland Sketches, though a serious reassessment of his works has brought his two piano concertos, two orchestral suites, and four piano sonatas back into the repertoire, along with numerous songs and character pieces. At his death, MacDowell left instructions that his farm at Peterborough, NH, be established as the MacDowell Colony, which has fostered the careers of over 5,000 artists.
