Jersey Street

About Jersey Street

Singer Dawn Zee and songwriter Neil Reid co-founded Jersey Street in 1997, following a period when Reid had recorded for Robs Records as a solo artist. Rounding out the group are Stephen Chesney, who is the band's mix master and engineer, and Matt Steele, who plays keyboard. Junior Boys Own put out Nobody But My Lord, the group's first record, and it hit the airwaves in 1998. The label Glasgow Underground soon signed the band. Reid and Chesney formerly worked together on the Delta Records recording Ruffcut EP1. Zee's experience lies in the categories of reggae and soul. In addition to singing, she also writes songs. She has performed with Basil, Bernard Sumner, and Sugar Minott. Steele's background includes work in Latin music, as well as funk and jazz. He became a member of the group during the summer of 1999, and he helped craft the Glasgow Underground record Vaya a Vivir, which hit the market three months later. The single, along with "How Could I Be Loved," led to the making of Step Into the Light, the band's first full-length album. Glasgow Underground put out the debut in 2000. ~ Linda Seida
