About Julian Marshall

b. 16 March 1954, Exeter, Devon, England. Songwriter and keyboard player Marshall was one half of the Marshall Hain band, who found instant chart success in 1979 with ‘Dancing In The City’, a highly melodic light funk song. The hit came before the band were fully prepared for the success that followed, and Marshall decided to jump ship. The break up of the band came after they were then sidelined by their record company just prior to recording a second album, Marshall then became a member of the Flying Lizards, who had a shot at the charts with a remake of Berry Gordy’s ‘Money’. He then formed Eye To Eye and issued two albums for Warner Brothers Records. In recent years Marshall has maintained a duel career as a music teacher in his home county of Devon. In the late 90s, he formed Umbrella People with former Marshall Hain member and highly sought-after UK session percussionist, Martin Ditcham (b. 22 February 1951, Ilford, Essex, England). Their debut, Selling Water By The River, was released in early 2000. Featuring some excellent trumpet playing from Dick Pearce, the album bridges the gap between pop and jazz. Intelligent instrumental music can be easy on the ear, and the combination of groove percussion and textured keyboards from the nucleus of Marshall and Ditcham made for a highly satisfying debut from two seasoned professionals.
