Terry Allen

About Terry Allen

Raised in Lubbock, Texas, along with fellow country iconoclasts the Flatlanders and Carol Jo Pierce, Terry Allen is as renowned for his multi-media art (and specifically sculpture) as he is for his hardhitting, literate country music. On albums such as the 1979 certified classic, LUBBOCK (ON EVERYTHING), and its outlaw follow-up, SMOKIN' THE DUMMY, Allen overturned country norms with a conceptual approach to narrative and song structure, a sardonic attitude, and experimental-yet-rootsy arrangements. Counting session ace Lloyd Maines and Talking Head David Byrne among his collaborators, he recorded thinking man's Americana and enjoyed a successful art career throughout the '80s, '90s, and '00s.
