Description

Contains English translation. English description below.

Bildene fikk 3. plass i den prestisjetunge Sony World Photography Awards i 2016.

Forfatter er Lin Prøitz, medieviter og kjønnsforsker.

English description

On Instagram, more than 300 million images are hashtagged #selfie. These images are just a small part of the massive amount of selfies that are being published on social media. How are we to understand this flow of self-images?

In step with the spread and volume of selfies shared publicly, the need to be able to understand complex visual communication has increased. We need skills that can make us more aware of what we are looking at as well as analytical perspectives that will enable us to interpret and reflect on our contemporary visual culture.

This book shows what a selfie is, what it expresses and how it forms part of our everyday life. How digital technology affects our understanding of intimacy, gender and sexuality – and how this is expressed in the public sphere – is of central importance. In addition, the book presents a historical review covering the development from the painted self-portrait to the digital selfie.

The photo artist Kristoffer Eliassen’s award-winning photo series is a particularly intriguing part of the book. The series received 3rd Place at the prestigious 2016 Sony World Photography Awards.

The author is Lin Prøitz, gender and media scientist.
