Album Review

During the late '80s/early '90s, Lita Ford seemed to get all the attention for being one of heavy metal's few female artists. But there were quite a few others as well, such as Doro. Quite similar stylistically to the melodic metal of Ford, Doro issued quite a few solo albums on her own (after exiting German metallists Warlock) throughout the '90s — which serves as the focus for the 2000 compilation Best of Doro. While the majority of the collection is comprised of headbanging anthems — "Cool Love," "Burning the Witches," "Let's Rock Forever" — there are a few surprises. The biggest of all is the "Original Mix" of "Ceremony," whose funky sounds are almost comparable to alt-electro-popsters Garbage (!). Still, Best Of is an admirable sampler of Doro's work, although with a large Warlock and solo discography, it would have benefited from a larger track listing (only 12 tracks are included, with "Ceremony" being featured in two different mixes).
