The Mint Chicks grasp the concept of what it means to be rock n roll.

From Howard Devoto to the Mint Chicks

I admit it, I’m old school, I like my music played by instruments & I’m not easily pleased but when I heard the mint chicks on bfm my audio sensibilities were aroused; when this happens the usual thing to do is to treat your ears to a live experience if only for the satisfaction of confirming that 1, they do play their instruments & 2, that they can recreate the experience live. The next thing to do is to buy the product so you can please your ears at your own discretion & not at the radio’s, so I bought the 10” vinyl copy of Anti-Tiger and now my ears are pleased on a semi-regular basis, there is nothing worse than overplaying a good tune. My original thought about Anti-Tiger & the Mint Chicks was that here is a band that is influenced by the Buzzcocks & the Pop Group; there is nothing wrong with influences, even when they are obvious because we all have them but these guys do justice to their influences & come out as prodigies. With Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! The Mint Chicks have appeared to drop the Pop Group in favour of the full Howard Devoto spectrum & Magazine, again there is nothing wrong with this because the Mint Chicks have their own interpretation & come up with tight, succinct, spitfire pop. However, I could be completely wrong, it may have never entered their heads to sound like anyone & this totally enjoyable music the Mint Chicks have composed may be completely of their own volition devoid of influence. Happy listening.

A second EP for the label, Anti-Tiger, followed eight months later, but not before a one-off single for Fierce Panda. In a matter of months, the band went from headlining...
