Document's Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1922-1923) reissues the first 23 sides of Eva Taylor's solo career. Though there aren't as many classic performances as on other volumes, the disc does include tracks with several important sidemen: clarinet player Sidney Bechet, pianist Clarence Williams, and cornet player Johnny Dunn. That's enough to make it an important acquisition for collectors and serious blues or jazz fans, though casual listeners won't find as much of interest.

Blues singer Eva Taylor broke new ground as an African American vocalist during the early part of the 20th century. She was among the first whose talent was broadcast on radio programs of the day, and she held down her own program in the '20s for NBC. She began recording around 1922, first for Black Swan and eventually for other labels that included Columbia, Okeh, and Bluebird.
