Album Review

When he was a young man, Luke Bryan put out EPs to celebrate Spring Break. Now that he's 40, he's a bit older and wiser, so he's decided to turn his attention to farmers. Ever since 2014, he's embarked on a Farm Tour in the autumn, and in 2016, he put out Farm Tour: Here's to the Farmer, a five-track EP. Highlighted by the mellow romantic tune "You Look Like Rain" — whose title is a clear call-back to his early hit "Rain Is a Good Thing" — Here's to the Farmer is a bright, sentimental little record, one that feels more like the old Luke Bryan than the spangly, modern 2015 album Kill the Lights. The nice trick about the EP is that he doesn't feel like he's pandering or reverting to old ways: he's simply offering his longtime fans a gift of his songs that sound like they did a decade ago, when he was just getting started, and it's hard not to find that gesture charming.

Singer and songwriter Luke Bryan comes by his country influences naturally: he grew up in Leesburg, Georgia, a small town 100 miles from the Alabama border where his father grew peanuts and sold fertilizer for a living. Bryan helped his family work the farm when he was young, but in his early teens he developed a passion for country music, picking up his influences from his parents' record collection, listening to the likes of George Strait, Conway Twitty, Ronnie Milsap, Alan Jackson, and Merle Haggard....
