With the first record in the ongoing Firmament series, Main severs its remaining ties to musical tradition, slipping out of the nooses of melody and rhythm to plunge fully into a brave new world of sound. Capturing an otherworldly environment which is by turns mysterious, disorienting, and sinister, Firmament is shorn completely of the patterns and motifs which typify standard ambient music — these four tracks (titled simply with Roman numerals) are instead like field recordings captured on an alien landscape, devoid of even the vaguest hint of human consciousness.

Upon the 1991 dissolution of the British trance-rock quartet Loop, bassist Neil McKay and John Wills formed the Hair and Skin Trading Company, leaving guitarists Robert Hampson and Scott Dawson to found the highly experimental Main, a project combining the aesthetics of ambient music with layered tapestries of droning electric guitar textures and dark, ominous soundscapes.
