Album Review

One of thousands of cheapy hits collections put out by RCA, Floyd Cramer's Super Hits delivers only in the flimsiest ways with a mere ten tracks. But, in the case of perennial lounge pianist Cramer, this small dose might be all one needs. And while Cramer certainly made mighty contributions to myriad Nashville sessions in the '50s and '60s, his contemporary solo turns often meant some romper room-issue covers and the most clean-cut playing. Covering his almost two-decade stay at RCA, the collection's latter-day cuts ("Dallas," "Help Me Make It Through the Night") thankfully balance out the pap with some semblance of country grit. It's better, though, to pick up a cheap copy of the pianist's earlier RCA hits album, The Best of Floyd Cramer.
