Album Review

Although their songs imply otherwise, the Hailey brothers had extensive careers in gospel before turning to secular music. The wails, shouts, and yells that accompany most of their hits reaffirm that tradition, and it's clearly audible often on their latest Uptown entry. Again they employ a running storyline/theme through the disc, this time incorporating audio vignettes about life on and off stage during a concert that are interspersed through the disc and help pad things out through what is a poorly edited and sequenced CD. Unlike many other urban and R&B groups, Jodeci doesn't really produce its material with singles in mind; there's not really one song here that works as a separate entity, even though several stations are playing edited cuts. Ironically, their refusal to emphasize radio hits, which in most cases would be deemed a sage creative ploy, frequently works against Jodeci. They let ballads drone on, up-tempo tunes end awkwardly, and extend sections until they lose their impact. However Jodeci's earnestness and enthusiasm often helps them overcome cliched lyrics and melodramatic vocals, and there are enough good moments sprinkled throughout this disc to make it worthwhile for most urban contemporary listeners.

RnB Kings...

This album is straight fire! You could listen to this today and think that it would of come out this year. Jodeci was way ahead of their time and alot of that had to do with Devante Swing production. Also I guess that comes down to the Jodeci sound which is heavily influenced the likes of the rnb artists you hear these days i.e. J Holiday, Bobby V and Trey Songz and so forth. S-More, Luv u 4 life, Good luv and Freek 'n' u are banger tracks and are still on heavy rotation. They don't make rnb like this these days and I wish they would. Alot of it these days is all sampled with no live instruments and auto-tune is the new sound and this lowers the artists singing abilities. Jodeci will always be real RNB and no one would question that....

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

If Boyz II Men were portrayed as a clean-cut, wholesome R&B vocal group, then Jodeci's wild, sexual, bad-boy image represented the other side of the coin. Made up of two sets of brothers, the group's name was a consolidation of its members' names: Joel "JoJo" Hailey, Donald "DeVante Swing" and Dalvin DeGrate, and Cedric "K-Ci" Hailey. Natives of Charlotte, North Carolina, all four members toured the South as young boys singing gospel music, and even recorded albums. Both families belonged to...
