Album Review

Michael Whalen created a rhythmic soundscape with a rock & roll beat for this PBS documentary miniseries about sea sponges and other invertebrates. While primarily synth-based, the music incorporates come colorful percussion, guitars, and marimba to keep the sound flowing. With ambient undercurrents, occasional echoes of the sparse style of film music composer Thomas Newman, and enough variety to sustain repeated listenings, the atmospheric Shape of Life makes for a pleasant musical diversion.
