EDITORS’ NOTES

“Does anybody listen to real hip-hop anymore?” If they listened to David Dallas, the answer would be an emphatic “yes.” The Auckland rapper proudly puts it down for hard work and humble roots. You can feel his surging passion on “Ring a Bell.” He deflects drama with punchlines (“Don’t be cool/Cool don’t feed your daughter”) on “Don’t Flinch”, and holds his own in a cipher with Lukan Raisey, Kidseb, and Trey Bond (“R U”). “Get Up Off” invokes ‘80s battle rapping at its fiercest. Hood Country Club does anything but conform to trends; it’s all about clever rhymes spit over knocking beats.
