Lace and Whiskey is Cooper’s eccentric love letter to vintage Hollywood and pop culture. Ditching his devilish alter ego for a noir-style private investigator, he tries out a slew of styles, including a sentimental ballad wrapped in velvety strings and crooner vocals (“You and Me”) and a frantic rockabilly number recorded like an old Sun single (“Ubangi Stomp”). When Cooper sticks close to his trademark hard rock (“It’s Hot Tonight”), the rich, smoky production harks back to pop music from a bygone era.
