Editors’ Notes

“Use Somebody” twirls in a splashing of guitar riffs and reverb-ed atmospherics, the backing vocals merging with the indistinct drones of the wispy keyboards. “Manhattan” most directly recalls the soulful screed of the Crowes’ Chris Robinson, while the band show unusual restraint leaving silences and space where they once would’ve come out with all guns drawn. The primitive, angry growls have turned to pensive moments of calm introspection (“Revelry,” “Cold Desert”). When they do ramp things up, it’s with a jazzy precision as “Crawl” and “Sex on Fire” employ a musical intricacy that would’ve been unthinkable back in the days of Youth and Young Manhood.

Kings of Rock!

Simply put… This album could be the greatest rock album of this decade easy! I have never considered Kings of Leon to be mainstream, sure they had songs like ‘on call’ that everyone knows and loves but not everyone knew who sung. With this album there will be no mistaking them as this is the consummate rock album. After one listen it was clear this was good, but the more it plays, the more you realise this is the crowning rock CD of this decade proving the name too true… Kings! This album is a journey mixing loud rock tracks like ‘Sex On Fire’ and ‘Be Somebody’ with Springsteen-esque tracks like ‘Revelry’ with feel good rock tracks such as ‘Use Somebody’ and ‘Notion’ in a way that leaves you jabbing at the play button when it concludes to get it started again… NOW! It has been a long while since I was excited about a forthcoming release, counted down the days and even with my pedestool expectations was still blown away. This album has incredible production, untouchable vocals from lead singer Caleb Followill and a sound that is unequivocally timeless. They have always had a likeable sound with an edge of unique vocals but this album goes even further, this is potentially as much of a stamp on the Rock n Roll landscape as Nirvana’s Nevermind. If you are not sure about this CD take the plunge… This will not disappoint.

Just keep getting better...

The Kings of Leon never fail to deliver a great sound, this album is well worth owning. I can see this being one of the big summer albums in New Zealand!

Can anyone top this?

Possibly the best album this year by the best band in the world, 2008!

Formed: 2000 in Nashville, TN

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Initially embraced as "the Southern Strokes" for their resurrection and reinvention of Dixie-styled rock & roll, Kings of Leon steadily morphed themselves into an experimental rock outfit during the 2000s. The Tennessee-bred quartet debuted in 2003 with the Holy Roller Novocaine EP, whose blend of raw, unpolished boogie rock was further explored on their debut full-length, Youth & Young Manhood. Such revivalist music was matched by a similarly revivalist appearance -- including long hair, mustaches,...
