As bravura opener “Nobody Made Me” notes, Skepta’s a big enough deal to be mates with P Diddy these days. Despite that track’s infectious triumphalism, the Londoner sounds wearied by fame on the brooding “Big”. It’s a contrast reflected throughout the album: rowdy posse cut “Thrown In the Bin” and the belligerent “Mike Lowery” evoke grime’s underground roots but the polish and hooks that illuminate “Rescue Me” and “Cross My Heart” are aimed straight at the charts. Skepta’s great skill is to sound assured and vital in either context.
