Unique and Underrated

I first bought this album on the day it came out in 1993. I had previously bought Devolve and had seen Shihad perform songs from Churn at the BFM summer series in January of that year. I'd never heard anything like it and to this day think it's one of the greatest metal albums i've ever owned. It was at the time completely original and perhaps a lot more influential than you might suspect. The lack of guitar solos and reliance on syncopated rhythms was completely unheard of back then. Jaz Coleman from Killing Joke was an apparent pain to work with but helped Shihad create an extremely unique record. And despite the fact that they\re now working together once more, I don't believe Shihad will ever make an album like Churn again. They came close with Killjoy but decided to head more into generic alternative hard rock from the 3rd album onwards. That's not to say I don't like those albums… Shihad have always been great to me, but I secretly yearned for something like Churn again. One of the most fascinating aspects about these early Shihad albums is that Faith No More loved the sound so much that they too decided to ditch the guitar solos resulting in the departure of Jim Martin. Which was a shame but just goes to show that Shihad may have had more influence on American Hard Rock of the 90's than you might think.

(According to legend, while covering the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the...
