Album Review

A hypnotic set of mathy post-rock, Ocelot's sophomore release bends and swerves through 11 tracks of generally successful instrumental rock dynamics. With stealthy rhythms carrying alternately abrasive and fluid guitar leads weaving around jackhammer basslines, the textural heaviness can grow a bit repetitive, as certain riffs are continually revisited and expanded upon. Still, the arrangements constantly spiral outward into generally interesting territory, which is likely to hold the listener's attention with their lack of predictability and apparent attempt to produce as much volume and expend as much energy as possible. As the intensity and chaotic eruptions can, at times, become a bit overwhelming, it's altogether welcome that they occasionally switch gears with moments such as the pastoral "Tiphareth." All in all, the songs seem to logically flow from one to the next, making a consistent and cohesive statement that's resonant in its singularity and impressive in its scope.
