Almost three decades into their career, Sydney-spawned guitar-pop mavens The Church sound as vibrant as ever on their 23rd release, channelling classic psychedelia and serving up fresh ideas with a blissful twist. Guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes generate kaleidoscopic textures over a quietly propulsive beat on “Deadman’s Hand”. The atmospheric keyboards and acoustic guitar of “On Angel Street” evoke Pink Floyd, while “Space Saviour” strikes a brilliant balance, with dreamy organs and guitars billowing behind crashing drums and Steve Kilbey’s aching vocals.
