Album Review

Southworth's sophomore effort is a bit easier to swallow, musically speaking; working with producer Hawksley Workman seems to have tamed a lot of the quirkier elements of Southworth's style. Where Mars Pennsylvania spent a lot of time in a Kurt Weill-like world, Sedona Arizona spends a lot of time in the '60s and '70s, with beautifully constructed pop occasionally colliding with a funk undertow. Southworth still takes on the role of the outsider and milks his androgyny on the album's big hit single, "Cute Girls Gay Guys."

John Southworth (which is undoubtedly his stage moniker taken from the saint of that name) has music in his blood. His father, Peter Shelley, was a major figure in the glam scene of 1970s England, and was also the A&R man who brought the world King Crimson.
