Chaka Khan’s third solo album exemplifies black pop in the early ’80s. Each track teems with collaborators, including trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie on an homage to early bebop, “And the Melody Still Lingers On (Night In Tunisia)”, and Khan’s brother Mark Stevens on their duet, “We Got Each Other”. Synth-oriented New Wave mingles with club-focussed post-disco, all of which producer Arif Mardin polishes to a gleam. No matter the sound, Khan sings with gospel-trained grace, delivering the powerhouse vocals that we expect from this certified diva.
