Album Review

Steve Albini was asked to produce this final U.S. release, and it's a screeching and wailing chunk of strum in the manner of their over-the-top debut LP The Gift of Life. Still, noisy and abrasive as it is, it's fairly tuneful and engaging in its own grubby lo-fi way. As usual, the band buries some of its best stuff amid a wall of sonic rubble, but this time the excavation will lead to the rescue of some excellent stuff.

Post-punk noise merchants the Membranes were one of the most powerful and polarizing British bands of the '80s and '90s. Their music was deliberately abrasive and forceful, full of jagged shards of guitar, deep slabs of bass, and crashing drums with a soupçon of electronic noise laid over the top as the group barked out lyrics about the chaotic state of the world around them.
