WHAT OTHERS SAY
“This app saved my life! * * * * *
This app was downloaded, while lost in the Kaimai Ranges. GPS quickly located position, app quickly (ish) downloaded the relevant NZ topo map. From there easily identified position on the map. Outcome, life saved. And my mates who by this stage was getting all girly about it all. Best app ever!!!” - Jk9624 on the UK App Store
No device requires a cellular data plan to use iHikeGPS NZ.
Recommended: the iPhone 4S or later, & the 4th or later generation iPads with WiFi+Cellular support full navigation.
Usable: the iPad 2 & 3rd generation iPad with WiFi+Cellular support full navigation except for map stitching.
The WiFi-only iPad 2 & later, and the iPod touch (5th gen) & later require an iOS-compatible external GPS receiver to show your location in the wilderness and to record tracks. View maps using the iOS device alone.
Continued Use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
Your dream of tramping adventures reaches new heights with iHike GPS NZ!

Ratings and Reviews
If you frequently get into the back country, where there's no cellular signal, this is the only app I know of which can track your location and show you where you are. If you keep your phone on airplane mode, so it doesn't go flat looking for a signal, it'll last all day with this on. Getting maps into it is a bit tricky (turn automatic screen locking off while you do it) and screen refresh can be a bit laggy, but when it counts this app is a lifesaver.
Recent versions of iHikeGPS NZ turn off automatic screen locking while maps are downloading, so this old issue no longer makes getting maps tricky, even on a very slow Internet connection in the wilderness.
Nice public domain maps, but cap on memory
Access to the public domain Land Information NZ and 250K Australian maps is good. For some reason there is a limit on the number of maps that can be downloaded. So one cannot actually access all of the free maps. More if a problem for me was a limit on the size of GPX files to 8000 points. This meant I could not store a trip longer than about 130 km.
You can download all of the maps for New Zealand or all of the maps for Australia. Or you can download a mixture of maps from both countries. You just can't download all of the maps for both countries at once. Most users wouldn't want to do that anyway, as storage memory on iOS devices is such a valuable resource.
This app is aimed at hikers who wouldn't be covering more than 130 km in a single day. For longer trips, you can use a separate route file for each segment of the trip, rather than trying to put the whole trip into one file.
Bought a couple of weeks ago on recommendation of hard core tramper and already it has rescued me when disorientated in the depths of the bush without internet reception. Intuitive to use, great value.
