Nau mai, tahuti ma! Welcome to our Pepeha App, a tool to help you prepare your pepeha. It’s aimed at helping learners of te reo Māori to get started and build confidence to speak Māori.
We’ve created this Pepeha App as a part of #1miriona, a social media campaign to engage a million supporters of the Māori language with te reo Māori content that people like, create and share online.
A pepeha is a statement of identity. It’s a tribal saying and how Māori introduce themselves on the marae or in a Māori setting, yet it’s a formula that can be used by all people. Some say pepeha can be seen as an ancient Global Positioning System (GPS) devised by our ancestors, linking us to significant landmarks that connect us to our tribal roots.
The Pepeha App will help you to construct your pepeha, assist you with pronunciation, and allow you to record and publish when you’re confident to share. Mauri Ora! Nā Te Māngai Pāho.
“E ora ai te reo – whiua ki te ao.” “For the language to survive – share it with the world.”
* All words in te reo Māori are Touch-to-Hear™
* Read-to-me and read-it-myself options
Customise the book:
* record your narration
* create your own pepeha
* export screen shot, audio, or screen recording video of your pepeha to social media.

The Pepeha app was created and funded by Te Māngai Pāho, the New Zealand Government Māori language agency operating in the broadcast sector. Te Māngai Pāho is dedicated to the sustained regeneration and promotion of Māori language and culture, see www.tmp.govt.nz.
The app was produced by Kiwa Digital, working in collaboration with Te Māngai Pāho. Kiwa Digital is a New Zealand based technology innovator specialising in language and culture revitalisation, see www.kiwadigital.com.
A fix to allow more than 18 characters input information in the self-populating pepeha fields.
Ratings and Reviews
This app could be so much better, it is a good try but such a budget app. There also should be a way to find out your Maunga and your awa. I hope some experts come in and fix it to make improvements. It also doesnt work very well on the smart phone.
Up to six family members will be able to use this app with Family Sharing enabled.
