About the Movie
Eve and Charlie are having a baby, but they're not together anymore. After years of history and months of separation, Charlie and Eve have 24 hours to find out whether they have a future together. Set in the earthquake ravaged city of Christchurch, New Zealand, SUNDAY is a story like the city, one of past devastation and a chance at rebuilding.
An understated and realistic romance
This film sits between 'Before Sunrise/Before Sunset' and 'Away We Go’ with a more pragmatic and understated approach. The scenario is refreshingly realistic and a familiar story; an estranged couple trying to renegotiate their relationship due to an unexpected pregnancy. The film explores gender and cultural stereotypes (the take away line being “a nation full of feminists”) without being overwrought. The recurring light flashes, heavy dialogue interspersed with pregnant silences clearly mark this as an independent film. The leading female actor is lovely though girlish at times. Christchurch provides an intriguing and symbolic backdrop. In all, a thoroughly modern middle class love story that isn’t too schmaltzy.
Better than Before Sunrise
I'm amazed that there aren't more reviews on here, this is one of the best kiwi films I've ever seen. I am a huge fan of the linklater films and I was not expecting a New Zealand film to do anything but butcher this genre but this was even a step above the reality and subtlety of Before Sunrise.
