About the Movie

Set in pre-colonial New Zealand The Dead Lands brings Maori history to life in an epic big screen experience. The film showcases stunning landscapes, the brutal traditional armed combat Mau rakau and an extraordinary local cast. This special New Zealand film explores the concept of mana (honour & respect) and the intricate protocols associated with it. The Dead Lands tells the story of Hongi (James Rolleston), a Maori chieftain's son who seeks to bring peace and honour to the souls of his loved ones after his tribe is killed through an act of treachery. Hongi's only hope is to pass through the feared and forbidden Dead Lands and forge an uneasy alliance with the mysterious "Warrior" (Lawrence Makoare), a ruthless fighter who has ruled the area for years.

The Dead Lands.

A very powerful movie that expresses Maori warrior/tribe confrontations long ago.

It is above average but let’s not get caught up...

The movie is overrated by most people in N.Z. Yes, it’s really nice to see familiar places and to hear Te Reo for the entire movie, and it was nice to see some familiar movies in the fight scenes. Also, the strong showing of ancestor ‘talk’ was interesting and good. But….and let’s be honest, there’s is a BUT….the story is predictable, the SFX are lame, some of the camera techniques are lamely borrowed from Peter Jackson, and overall this is about making Kiwis feel good rather than provide them with an awesome international-level cinematographic experience. So enjoy it for what it is.

Definitely worth a watch

Although this film is not without faults - there is the odd jarring edit in the story line or leap in the story -line the viewer must make for themselves - overall, it is a thrilling view. The fights scenes are good and the sotryline is spiced with the odd piece of black humour. The photographic direction is outstanding. Great to see Maori language on the big screen too. If you can't take subtitles for the entire movie, this wont be for you. If you can't you're in for a fun watch that provokes a little thought.
