For their fourth studio album, 1977’s Burnin’ Sky, Bad Company continued with brawny, soulful hard rock that spotlighted lead singer Paul Rodgers’ prototypical 1970s hard rock vocals. Without the aid of a blockbuster single, the album suffered commercially and critically. However, while no single tune captured the imagination of the masses like their hits — “Can’t Get Enough,” “Feel Like Makin’ Love” — this is still a solid collection of blues-influenced hard rock. The title track is an ominous beginning, working with clear, focused lead guitar lines and carefully administered rhythm guitar chords from Mick Ralphs. “Morning Sun” throws in acoustic 12-string. “Like Water” is an admirable slow blues. “Heartbeat” thumps with the trademarked Bad Company swagger. “Master of Cermony” is a two-chord guitar-organ vamp with Rodgers singing in his most worn out, mocking tone. “Everything I Need” employs bassist Boz Burrell and drummer Simon Kirke to the tightest of their abilities and includes some bizarre spoken word bits that, along with the goofy minute-and-a-half of  “Knapsack,” show off the group’s much hidden silly side.
