It is not surprising listening to this CD to find out that Benny Goodman has long been Harry Skoler's idol for his interplay with vibraphonist Ed Saindon (three songs are clarinet-vibes duets) and the inclusion of such songs as "Stompin' at the Savoy," "Memories of You" and "Sweet Lorraine" (among others) point directly at BG. On the other hand, Skoler's quartet (with bassist Roger Kimball and drummer Tim Gilmore) does not include a piano (except on two pieces when Saindon or Skoler switch instruments) and a few of the selections are more modern; also Ed Saindon looks much more toward Gary Burton as a role model than to Lionel Hampton. In any case, this enjoyable set offers listeners melodic swing-based music played at a high level.
