After going for a few urban contemporary touches on I Got the Touch, L.V. Johnson returns to a consistently soul-oriented approach on his third Ichiban release Unclassified. Stronger than its predecessor and every bit as impressive as Cold and Mean, Unclassified sounds like an album the deep-voiced singer wanted very much to make. Recalling the smooth northern soul coming out of Chicago, Detroit and Philadelphia in the 1970s, slow and medium-tempo gems like "Voodoo Woman," "Four Walls" and "Whatever Happened" are retro in the best sense of the word. For fans of classic '70s soul, this heartfelt CD is something to savor.

A mournful, often gripping singer and a good guitarist, Chicago performer L.V. Johnson actually did better as a writer than a lead artist. His songs "Are You Serious" and "True Love Is Hard to Find" were big hits for Tyrone Davis, while "Country Love" did moderately well for Bobby "Blue" Bland, and "Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation" was among the Dells' finest soul performances.
