Reseña de álbum

This is contemporary Hawaiian music in a classic mode. Darin Leong has a great feel to his music, rolling from melody to melody with ease and a fair amount of musical grace. The compositions are slick, using the guitar in roughly equal proportion with a tenor ukulele. The motif for the album is Leong's journey through life in the five years or so following 9/11 — in practice, however, this doesn't come through as much in the instrumental pieces that make up the album. Nonetheless, the strong influences of the slack-key masters make themselves known well, and that makes the music worth hearing. His slack-key itself is fairly good, but it's the somewhat unusual sound of the tenor uke that really makes the album interesting. There are tones of Hapa in the playing (helped out a bit by the addition of Hapa's bassist, Nathan Aweau), and tones of a Willie K or someone similar. At the same time, Leong puts his own stamp on the performances — a relatively thick sound from the strings, a dense arrangement, and a modern composition style — with just a touch of the classic ki hoalu compositions. Worth a shot for a glance at something of a musical crossroads between classic slack-key stylings and more straightforward contemporary Hawaiian music.
