Although he’s hardly a name that most contemporary country fans know, Wynn Stewart had a solid career that began in the mid-'50s and stretched into the 1980s, and his prototype L.A.-based Bakersfield sound paved the way for Buck Owens, Merle Haggard (Stewart gave Haggard his first professional break by hiring him as a bass player in 1962), and many others. This succinct set has all of his hits, beginning with 1956’s “Waltz of the Angels,” and also includes later gems like 1965’s “I Keep Forgettin’ That I Forgot About You” and his signature tune, 1967’s lilting and infectious “It’s Such a Pretty World Today.” All the absolute essentials are here.

Wynn Stewart was one of the leading figures of West Coast country music, developing in the early '50s the style that would later become known as the Bakersfield sound. Along with Tommy Collins and Buck Owens, Stewart stripped down the sound of honky tonk, taking away the steel guitars and relying on electric instruments, a driving beat, and loud, energetic performances.
