EDITORS’ NOTES

Despite hailing from Puerto Rico, throwback indie rocker Bairoa's debut EP feels closer to Ibiza, specifically the Mediterranean island's chilled-to-the-max '80s Balearic sound. He expertly revives that synth-kissed and disco-inspired glide on "Lune" and drenches the electro-leaning funk of "Champagne Daze" in suitably woozy saxophone. Deeply indebted to the reverb-wrapped grooves that defined European clubs just before house music, Barlovento also contains a few hauntingly atmospheric R&B jams, including the luxurious quiet-storm homage "Sixteen Candles."
