Reseña de álbum

The Very Best of Jazz series on Concord/Universal is, for all practical purposes, a new budget set of compilations that looks over a particular artist's tenure at either Prestige, Riverside, Fantasy, or one of the affiliate labels Concord acquired when it purchased Fantasy Records in the early 21st century. This double disc by John Coltrane looks at his early recordings as a leader with and apart from the Miles Davis band from the period. While it's true that nothing here is rare or unusual in any way, these sides are all of the highest quality in terms of performance, and provide newcomers with the invaluable service of a solid look at Coltrane's lesser known but very worthy hard bop recordings in the pre-Atlantic and Impulse years. The company Trane keeps on these sides is impeccable: Art Taylor, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Wynton Kelly, Tommy Flanagan, Wilbur Harden, and many more. A good listen through this set finds it to be perfectly sequenced, beautifully remastered, and somewhat handsomely packaged, making for a pleasing as well as aesthetically astute offering.

It seems amazing that his period of greatest activity was so short, not only because he recorded prolifically, but also because, taking advantage of his fame, the record companies that recorded him as a sideman in the 1950s frequently reissued...
