In a Space Outta Sound

Jamaica's influence looms large over Nightmares on Wax's fifth studio album, from the wall of speakers on the cover to the dubby atmospheres that colour the producer's laidback collages. On "The Sweetest", rootsy basslines and splashes of organs are supple and spacious; "Flip Ya Lid" swims in glancing guitar chords and slapback delay. But reggae is just the starting point. "Pudpots" pairs boom bap breaks with screeching horn stabs and the falsetto-led "I Am You" looks to '60s soul, while "Deep Down" flirts with Latin salsa.
