Album Review

Few bands ever combined crunchy, severely low-end metal guitar riffs with full-on keyboard harmonies with the audacity of Sweden's Tad Morose. Add singer Kristian Andren's melodic, muscular style to the mix, and what you have is a strange cross between Dream Theater (minus the excess showboating) and classic European power metal — an unusual blend which has worked extremely well throughout the band's career. Having said that, the band's third official recording, 1995's Paradigma EP, isn't one of their strongest efforts. In fact, it almost feels accidental, like an album cut short, as if the band's mounting inner tensions (major personnel upheavals were on the horizon) caused them to punch out of the factory a little earlier than originally planned. Additionally hampered by a somewhat iffy production job, this understandably results in a somewhat inferior product, especially when compared to the band's later triumphs. However, choice tracks like "Stories Around a Tale" and "Where Dreams Collide" still offer a number of memorable moments, and feature the dependably fantastic guitar solos. Therefore, committed Tad Morose fans will find plenty of reasons to include this release in their collection.
