Album Review

High School rockers Grotto's first record owes its existence to the Amphetamine Reptile record label. Three of that label's bands, namely Mog Stunt Team 5, Calvin Krime, and Janitor Joe, explicitly influenced the development of Grotto's sound. That said, Get a Hustle stands up confidently to the aforementioned underground hard rock luminaries, and earns Grotto the right to call the Selby Tigers, Vaz, and Enemymine their contemporaries. Grotto has the energy, the consistency, and the hooks to please any fan of the AmRep sound, but Get a Hustle isn't just a carbon copy of the legendary label's formula. The band is definitely trying to carve out its own niche, and the lengthy, sample-laden, arrhythmic, and occasionally atonal hidden track hints at the band's willingness to experiment.

Twin City punk group Grotto first began playing together when they were freshmen in high school, in the winter of 1995. Their first shows were sporadic and scattered around the punk clubs of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and other than releasing one 7" in the spring of 1998, the band dwelt in relative underground obscurity. The band took a short break in the spring of 1999 as bass player Mike Dombrowski was bitten by the post-high school travel bug. The remaining members, guitarist and singer Chris Mishek...
