About Bud Shank
Part of the tightly knit group of Los Angeles-based musicians who formed the nucleus of the West Coast jazz scene of the 50s, Bud Shank first played alto saxophone with the big bands of Charlie Barnet and Alvino Rey. After joining the Stan Kenton band, he took up the flute, and his highly original playing greatly advanced the use of that instrument in be-bop and beyond, including collaborations with Laurindo Almeida and Ravi Shankar. (He played the famous alto flute solo on the Mamas & Papas' 1966 hit "California Dreamin'.") Returning to the saxophone, Shank spent much of the '60s recording for film and television studios. In 1974, he formed the L.A. Four, and, at the age of 80, he formed his first ever band as leader.
