About Dawn of Midi

The Brooklyn group known as Dawn of Midi are shaped like a jazz trio, but play danceable music in the minimalist style of classical composers like Glass, Reich, and Adams. Featuring bassist Aakaash Israni, pianist Amino Belyamani, and percussionist Qasim Naqvi, the group all met in Brooklyn, not in the studio, but in the lighted, parking-lot tennis courts where they played late-night matches. At first, Dawn of Midi were a loose, improvisatory group but they evolved into a more syncopated and tight band. Recording every rehearsal over the next two years and winding up with over 150 recordings, the group combed through the tapes and used the best bits to compose their debut album. The results, Dysnomia, were released by the Thirsty Ear label in 2013. ~ David Jeffries
