This podcast is an introduction to Anglophone literature, from ancient times to the present, done by a Ph.D. with lots of books and musical instruments. A typical episode offers a summary of a work, or part of a work of literature, followed by some historical analysis. The episodes include original music, some comedy songs, and goofy jokes. You can listen to the shows in any order, although from time to time, episodes will make brief mention of previous or upcoming ones.

Literature, History, and Philosophy in One Quality Podcast Package

This podcast has quickly become one of my favorites! Mr. Metzger does a marvelous job of melding literature, history, and philosophy into an enjoyable episode each and every time. Add to that his musical talents and you get a podcast that has very few equals. The production value is amazing, which makes this easy to listen to and allows you to focus on the content itself, literature and history. The podcast has already covered a broad array of ancient sources, including engrossing trilogies for both the Iliad and the Odyssey. I’d highly recommend this podcast if you want an engaging summary of ancient literature that you have never read, but I offer fair warning that Mr. Metzger’s well-written and produced summaries will make you want to read the originals for yourself! And even if you’re familiar with the covered literature, his witty and knowledgable treatment of the material and its historical and philosophical context may shine a new light on things for you. In any event, you owe it to yourself to hit that subscribe button!

Very Good

Fans of Mike Duncan and Dan Carlin will enjoy this podcast. Episodes are well written and paced, and the host's expertise is top-knotch. I was a reminded a little of The History of Philosophy Without any Gaps. Both hosts are obviously head-over-heels in love with their topic.

This is by far my favorite podcast. Doug Metzger is scholarly and serious about his work, yet not stuffy. He clearly loves the literature and has just the right amount of humor. It's a testament to his telling and dicussion of the stories that at the end of each podcast I have this burning urge to read or reread the original of the work that was just discussed. Some of the muscial pieces are really funny too. Keep it going Doug! Boom Boom Boom Sea Monster!
