Reaction to Audio Podcast of Metropolitan Community Church of New York

Both audio & video podcasts begin with a jazzy Charlie Brownish intro as the senior pastor of this church, Rev. Pat Bumgardner, offers a bite-size concise & accurate description of the ministry.

Technically speaking, this podcast is quite user-friendly: during a warm, brief opening prayer, a lullabye plays quietly in the background like soft rain. Some episodes like “Steel Away” begin with a soothing musical piece.

The recordings honor the humanity of the audience as we are gently reminded by laughter & occasional coughs in the background, but the pastors’ pacing & clarity of voice are adeptly rendered and fore-fronted in a professional, listenable way.

It is impossible to bristle with old negative associations of what people traditionally think of as a sermon. From the get-go, this podcast feels more like Pick & Choosing Your Own Adventure, depending on how you need to be ministered to at the moment.

You’ll notice the titles are inviting, sometimes witty, and always inclusive. As each episode averages 30 minutes, clicking on a message is like being affirmed for half an hour, if you need to be called back into Love or if you need to be challenged, then it is like a defibrillator on the soul shocking you the way one’s brains freeze when slipping into a hot bath. This is, after all, the Human Rights Church, and so it is vocal with such allegiances. In a nutshell: a call to Action, a call to Love, and a call Home.

Spiritual and Uplifting

This podcast was recommended by a good friend. I've found the messages spiritual, funny and uplifting. I've never heard God's word presented in such a positive, invigorating way. A must listen.

Don't expect to find folksy, dumbed-down Christian theology here. If that's what you prefer for religion, there are lots of other podcasts, I'm sure. These messages are direct, scholarly, and challenging. You might walk away wondering why all this stuff about Jesus has been hidden away, lied about, or both.
