Reseña de álbum

During 1937-38, Artie Shaw and two of his orchestras participated in six marathon recording sessions in which they cut 127 selections for radio transcriptions. Swingdom, on a pair of two-LP sets and a four-LP box, has released these well-recorded performances in complete chronological order. The first two-fer is among the most interesting, for it captures the clarinetist's first orchestra (which, in addition to five horns and a four-piece rhythm section, featured a string quartet) a few days after its final regular recording session, and his second band shortly before its first record date; the only holdovers were Tony Pastor (on tenor and vocals), bassist Ben Ginsberg and Shaw himself. The first band deserved to succeed (it had a unique new sound of its own) but could not compete with the much more powerful ensembles of his competitors. The second orchestra, which a year later would be a surprise sensation, was more conventional but no less musical. Artie Shaw collectors in particular will have to acquire this valuable series.
