A typically great session with typically uninformative liner notes, Pray on, My Child is a 14-track collection of what turns out to be early-'60s recordings for Vee-Jay. Though it's been reissued several times over (as Pray On) and lacks anything but a brief bio, the music displays one of gospel's most moving groups at their prime. With occasional guitar or drums for accompaniment, but always his powerful daughters backing his leads, Pops Staples stretches out with the standards "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Get Right Church," and "Uncloudy Day."

The Staples' story goes all the way back to 1915 in Winona, Mississippi, when patriarch Roebuck "Pops" Staples entered the world. A contemporary and familiar of Charley Patton's, Roebuck quickly became adept as a solo blues guitarist, entertaining at local dances and picnics. He was also drawn to the church, and by 1937 he was singing and playing guitar with the Golden Trumpets, a spiritual group based out of Drew, Mississippi.
