Album Review

Ian Moore's Got the Green Grass is a happy crossing of the blues he grew up playing and pop of groups like the Beatles. Moore grew up steeped in the tradition of the blues with a heavy dose of the R&B music of the '60s and such groups as Sly & the Family Stone along with the songwriting talents of Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder. One of his first outings was a guitarist for Joe Ely, which helped build the songwriting skills of this talented guitarist and vocalist. This disc brings all those various influences into play and shows that he has taken these diverse influences and molded them into something that is uniquely his own. This disc is dominated by his singing, and he does have a good strong voice that holds its own but really shines on the James Chambers-written "Many Rivers to Cross." His version of this song, with the band rock-solid behind him each step of the way, following both his voice and guitar leads, is the standout on the disc. There is truly not a weak cut on the disc, and the songs with their differing styles are artfully blended to make a comprehensive whole.
