Album Review

Ivo Perelman has a ferocious tone on tenor-sax and often indulges in exploration of the extreme upper register of his horn. Although his interplay with bassist Dominic Duval and drummer Jackson Krall on Black on White is mostly quite free, there are lyrical sections and Perelman shows that occasionally he does not mind caressing melodies. The mood variation is very important in this music because otherwise it would be unremittingly intense. It also shows another side to Perelman's musical personality, allows him to contrast violence with warmth, and keeps the music from being entirely high-energy. Ivo Perelman has recorded many CDs during the past decade and this one should satisfy his fans.
