The proper debut album for Moodymann, Mahogany Brown alternates mellowed-out disco dubs like "Mahogany Brown" and "Stoneodenjoe" with more aggressive tech-house tracks like "Me and My People's Eyes." Though it would be nearly impossible to top A Silent Introduction, the singles compilation released one year before, Kenny Dixon, Jr. does a tremendous job skirting the slender divide between sublime Detroit techno and more soul-inflected house like the work of Terrence Parker.

Kenny Dixon, Jr.'s outspoken views on the state of black techno and his aversion to publicity put him in a league occupied by few Detroit producers other than Underground Resistance supremo "Mad" Mike Banks, though his tech-house productions as Moodymann are soulful in a league few could expect. Dixon began producing early in the '90s, and inaugurated his own KDJ Records in 1994 with the Moody Trax EP.
