Album Review

Diskothiq has been a relatively long-lived band, and it tends to show — 1996's Waterworld falls into the jangly, melodic mid-ground of indierock that's existed since the earliest days of post-punk. Given this, and the fact that Waterworld is the sound of matured band, it's not surprising that the record lacks bite; its tracks lay out 2-guitar pop in its purest form, and the record's interest tends to lie in its decently appealing composition and its thoroughgoing inoffensiveness.

Upland, CA's Diskothi Q served as one of the most articulate and intelligent indie rock quartet's of the 1990s, before sputtering to a halt in the early 2000s. Led by brothers Peter Hughes (guitar, vocals) and bassist Kevin Hughes, drummer Kevin Trapp rounded out the three-piece combo. The band's first releases in 1993 (on the Shrimper, Sonic Enemy, and Volvolo labels) started a flurry of output by the group.
